Courses are generally a combination of information-giving and practical work on realistic cases and situations, including queries brought by participants themselves. All course participants are given packs of background information for future reference. Packs contain PERS’s own employment rights guidance literature and other publications such as DTI Guides and leaflets.

Trainers draw on their wide experience of the ‘letter of the law’ and on its practical application gained from dealing with hundreds of enquiries from workers to the PERS Advice Lines.

‘TAILORED TRAINING’

PERS can offer training that is tailored as precisely as possible to the needs and requirements of participants. We are always happy to discuss these in advance and to adapt existing courses for your organisation, or design a new course specifically for your needs.

We prefer to train a group of between 6 and 20 people. We do not have our own training premises and require a room and a flipchart. We welcome the provision of refreshments, especially on longer courses!

Homeworking Unit

SERVICES

West Yorkshire Homeworking Unit (WYHU) works with people who are either doing paid work from home or are looking for such work. Homeworkers are often isolated and face problems of low pay, lack of employment status and poor or unsafe working conditions. Our aim is to tackle these problems, particularly in ways that include homeworkers themselves. We also work to increase public awareness of the nature and extent of homeworking. We work across the whole of West Yorkshire covering Bradford, Calderdale, Kirklees, Leeds and Wakefield.

ADVICE

We produce a range of leaflets explaining how people can look for work to do from home, how to avoid fraudulent homeworking advertisements (scams) and covering health and safety issues. We also work with community groups throughout West Yorkshire to provide information and promote homeworking. Throughout the year we hold information stalls at various events to promote homeworking and provide information and advice.

TRAINING

WYHU works with community groups and other training providers to support individuals in developing skills which will enable them to work from home. The types of training that can be organised include:

  • How to look for work to do from home
  • Skills identification
  • Employment rights
  • Health and safety
  • Food hygiene
  • Childcare
  • Sewing skills
  •
